How to Help Captain Paul Watson, a Hero Dedicated to Protecting Marine Life

For decades, Captain Paul Watson has been a prominent figure in the global fight for animal welfare, particularly when it comes to protecting marine life, specifically whales, from humans who seek to harm them. As the founder of an organization called the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Captain Watson has spent his life defending animals from cruel and illegal practices with a focus on anti-whaling. His unwavering dedication has inspired many adults and kids around the world to take action against animal cruelty, but his bravery standing up against the slaughter of whales has also led to his recent imprisonment and potential extradition to Japan, a country that has long been criticized for its whaling industry. As LEAP students it’s important to stand up for those putting their lives on the line for animals. Read on to take a closer look at Captain Watson’s life’s work, the circumstances surrounding his arrest, and what you can do as a young activist to support him and help marine animals.

Who is Captain Paul Watson?

Captain Paul Watson began his career as a co-founder of Greenpeace in 1971 but later formed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in 1977. His goal was to stop illegal activities like whaling, poaching and fishing that harm a wide variety of animals in the world’s oceans. Sea Shepherd, under Captain Watson’s leadership, is known for its direct-action tactics, where activists confront illegal fishing vessels and whalers at sea, often putting themselves between the hunters and the animals they’re trying to save. Many have compared them to modern-day “good” pirates.

One of Watson’s most notable actions has been his relentless fight against whaling, which is still practiced by several nations, including Japan. In many cases, Sea Shepherd ships have physically intervened to prevent whalers from hunting endangered species, despite facing legal challenges and threats of violence. These daring efforts have drawn the attention of governments and media worldwide (including on the TV show Whale Wars) which has made Watson a hero to many—but a criminal in the eyes of others.

Why Was Captain Paul Watson Arrested?

On July 21, 2024, Captain Watson was arrested when his ship docked in Greenland in order to refuel. Greenland has kept him imprisoned and he now faces extradition to Japan, a country that has sought to arrest him for many years due to the actions he has taken to incapacitate their whaling fleet. Captain Watson claims Japan’s ships are involved in illegal whaling practices though they claim to be doing “scientific research.” Japanese authorities, on the other hand, say  that Watson and Sea Shepherd’s interventions endangered the lives of their crew members. Watson insists however, that his actions are nonviolent and aimed at protecting the lives of whales.

If extradited to Japan, Captain Watson could face harsh penalties, including a long prison sentence. This would not only silence one of the world’s most respected voices for marine conservation, but could also have serious implications for other activists around the world.
